On March 27, the Carnival Development Corporation (CDC) announced the finalists for the Junior Calypso/Soca Competition slated for Tuesday, July 3, at Carnival City, Victoria Park.

Seven junior calypsonians will look to dethrone last year’s primary school monarch, Kristiana ‘Singing Kristy’ Christopher of the Layou Government School. They are: Aaaliyah Nero of the Owia Government School, Antonio ‘Singing Antonio’ Telemaque of the Kingstown Anglican, Jenille ‘Jennie’ Garrick of the New Prospect Primary, Deandre ‘Raving King J’ Lavia of the Owia Government, Alieka Baynes of the Park Hill Government school Cha-Chano Morgan of the New Prospect Primary and Abigail Alexander of the Fancy Government.

Christopher secured the Junior Calypso Monarch title in last year with her song “Give we back we mind.” She also placed third in the Soca Monarch competition with her song “De animal in we.”

In the Junior Calypso Secondary School competition, another seven young calypsonians will fight for the crown, currently held by Shade ‘Shade’ Barker of the St Joseph’s Convent Kingstown.

A two-time winner of the competition, Barker got the judges’ nod last year with her song ‘Love the children’, which called for an end Child Abuse.

The finalists named are: Deroney ‘The Messenger’ May of the Sandy Bay Government Secondary, Iran ‘Soca Rasta’ Pompey, also of the Sandy Bay Secondary. Shane ‘Shaney’ Wynne of the Bishop’s College Kingstown, Beverna Simmons of the George Stephens Secondary, Ottis ‘Flippa’ Cain of the St Vincent Grammar School, Patrick ‘Kool Kid’ De Freitas, also of the St Vincent Grammar School, and Gillian Smart of the St Joseph’s Convent Kingstown.

Ottis ‘Flipa’ Cain will be up for battle again as seven eager students look to take his soca monarch crown.

Those finalists announced are: Delanzo ‘Lanzo’ Lavia of the Owia Government, Omalli ‘Magic Man’ Collins of the Greiggs Government, Kurtney ‘The Soca Man’ Pompey of the Sandy Bay Government, Giovanni ‘Super D’ Collins of the St Joseph’s Convent Marriaqua, Kitzroy ‘Vincy Prince’ Johnson of the St Joseph’s Convent Marriaqua, Shane ‘Shaney’ Wynne of the Bishop’s College Kingstown and Kirstiana ‘Singing Kristy’ Christopher of the Layou Government.

Cain, who won the Junior Calypso title in the primary schools’ category back in 2010, won the Junior Soca competition with his innovative rendition of “Laptops Galore”.
