The graduation ceremony, held under the theme: “Being the best you can be wherever you are”, saw each pew at the Kingstown Baptist Church packed to capacity as the students, parents and wellwishers turned out to wish the graduates farewell.

The twenty graduates, who were all successful at this year’s Common Entrance Examination, were all smiles as they held and hugged each other before taking their seats.

Delivering her report, Principal of the school, Carol Smith, outlined some of the initiatives taken on by the school for the 2009/2010 school year. Smith said the honour roll was established, which saw a total of 40 students of the school making the list. Seven persons from that list came from the graduating class. They were: Isabel Sotto, Thandi Myers, Sabeene Khalil, Rukersha Jackson, Chelsea Haslam, Sebastian Cyrus and Dary Jack. Each student obtained an average of at least 85%.

Smith thanked her staff for assisting the students in preparation for their examinations, even when they were on vacation. Smith also beseeched the graduating class to “Step into the future with faith” as they move on to their secondary education.

“Be the best you can be and learn to respect and value yourself,” Smith urged.

The day also saw students receiving special awards in different fields. Daryl Jack and Thandi Mayers received awards for being the school’s top performers the Common Entrance Exam. Chelsea Haslam and Isabel Sotto nabbed the awards for coming in second. Rukersha Jackson, who came in the third position for the school and obtained 100% for Mathematics, was also awarded. The “Most Improved Student” award went to Andranica Defreitas. The “Best Behaved Student” award went to Troy Halibich. China Primus received the Principal’s award.

Delivering the valedictory speech, Chelsea Haslam reflected on some of the wonderful experiences she had throughout her time at the school. Haslam expressed her gratitude to all the teachers who not only helped her but also the entire grade 6 class. The confident young lass urged her classmates to continue doing well in school.

Dr Cecil Cyrus, renowned general surgeon, who delivered the feature address, made it clear to the graduates that in order to achieve success in life they must adopt the correct attitude.

Cyrus, who served as Chairman of the Board at the school, described his address as a medley of advice to the students that will be helpful in their journey through secondary education. Cyrus told the youngsters that they were not too young to choose their career paths.

“I knew from the age of seven I wanted to become a doctor, so it’s not too early for you to make up your minds,” he advised.

Cyrus also encouraged the students to maintain self discipline and take their education seriously.

Other students bid farewell to the graduates by performing songs, poems and steel pan music.
