Fewer Occupational incidents for Vinlec Workers in 2024
VEHICULAR ACCIDENTS, fires, a minor oil spill and even a bite from a canine- these are some of the occupational incidents recorded by the St Vincent Electricity Ltd in 2024.
The incident report was revealed by Environmental Health and Safety Officer, Zonya Shallow, during the opening ceremony of the launch of the company’s annual Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Awareness Month.
The launch was held on Monday, April 28, 2025, the day observed internationally as World Day for Safety and Health at Work, designated by the International Labour Organization (ILO), and Shallow described the day as the “perfect occasion” to launch the month-long calendar of activities.
Shallow said despite a decrease in the number of recorded vehicular accidents last year when compared to 2023, it underscores the need for safety to take first priority for VINLEC employees at all times.
“We had 22 vehicular accidents which is a decrease from 27 in 2023. Three public liability, and these were all injuries to the public, and four fires.Year-to-date, we have had six vehicular accidents…”.
In addition to vehicular accidents, VINLEC also recorded two staff injuries including from a dog bite, while another employee suffered injury to the eye. A minor fuel spill was also recorded.
“We have also had one public notification- which was damage to a car and one personal injury,” Shallow added.
The number one cause of many of the company’s occupational incidents, Shallow pointed out, was the clearing of vegetation.
