GHS tops CSEC again!

Nailah Jack of the St Vincent Girls’ High School and O’Neil Sprott of the St Vincent Grammar School are the top female and male performers respectively in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) in the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) Secondary Education Certificate Examinations (CSEC) for 2023.

The Ministry of Education released the updated preliminary results of the May/June 2023 CSEC results yesterday, after a delay of more than a month. The release of the overall national results had been delayed while the ministry sought clarity from the CXC about the unusually high number of ungraded scores returned by the examining body this year.

Jack, the daughter of Keyon and Tisha Jack of Dorsetshire Hill sat 14 subjects and obtained 11 grade ones and 3 grade twos. Sprott, the son of O’Neil Sprott Snr. and Tamara Job-Sprott of Prospect sat 13 subjects and obtained 10 grade ones and 3 grade twos.

For yet another year, the Girls’ High School was the nation’s top performer, returning a pass rate of 98.84 per cent. The St Vincent Grammar School was second, with 93.32 per cent; the St Martin’s Secondary School, third, with 93.17 per cent; Thomas Saunders Secondary, fourth with 92.76 per cent; Canouan Secondary School, fifth, with 89.86 per cent; St Joseph’s Convent Kingstown, sixth, with 89.72 per cent and the Bequia Seventh Day Adventist School, seventh with 86.73 per cent.

The release from the Ministry of Education said this year, 2133 candidates were registered. Of these, 1486 were school candidates and 647 were private candidates.

There were 1472 school candidates from 27 secondary schools scheduled to sit papers I and II with 10,277 subject entries in 31 subject areas. Approximately 72.16 per cent of the subject entries were awarded Grades I – III. The corresponding figure in 2022 was 66.55 per cent.

This year, 17.57 per cent of the passes were at Grade I level, 38.48 per cent at Grade II and 43.95 per cent at Grade III. The figures in 2022 were 16.96 per cent at Grade I, 35.40 per cent at Grade II and 47.64 per cent at Grade III.

Seven schools obtained creditable pass rates between 60 per cent and 80 per cent. These are: St Joseph’s Convent Marriaqua – 78.02 per cent; North Union Secondary School – 76.21 per cent; Mountain View Adventist Academy – 72.78 per cent; Buccament Bay Secondary School – 69.31 per cent; Bishop’s College Kingstown – 68.12 per cent; St Clair Dacon Secondary School – 63.55 per cent and Barrouallie Secondary School – 63.48 per cent.

“The Bequia Community High School (BCHS) and the West St. George Secondary School (WSGSS) showed improvement in their performance at the 2023 CSEC examinations. In 2022, the BCHS recorded a pass rate of 27.63 per cent and the WSGSS recorded a pass rate of 31.28% per cent. In 2023, BCHS pass rate increased to 54.26 per cent and the WSGSS pass rate rose to 55.22 per cent. These figures represent an increase of 26.62 per cent and 23.94 per cent respectively, “ the release said.
