Joint 2022 Junior Soca Monarch aims for successful career in music
Winning the 2022 Junior Soca Monarch competition is just one of the stepping stones on which Gidroy “Deco J” Theobalds hopes to build a successful career in music.
Theobalds, a student of the Central Leeward Secondary School earned his first ever crown at the Junior Soca competition on Tuesday, June 28, an achievement about which he is extremely proud.
He shared the top spot with Deano Nero, a first former from the Sandy Bay Secondary School.
“I’m feeling great because how its my first time and I came for the first time and actually sat on a seat with a crown on my head, I’m feeling proud of myself so I feel I will just continue to do what I’m doing because if I continue, I think I’ll have a future in it,” he told SEARCHLIGHT on Tuesday evening.
The third former’s song, “Menu” is one that he wrote himself, after becoming inspired by his many girl friends who often have a hard time making up their mind about what they want to eat whenever they go out.
Theobalds said he’s been passionate about music ever since he was a little boy, and would spend a lot of time writing R&B, soca and reggae songs in a big notebook.
He said that he would revisit these lyrics from time to time to see what works, and other times just write a new song altogether.
“I love soca. Soca is life. I will continue to write soca… I will call myself a soca artiste because I write songs and I release them. I’m supposed to have [a] couple songs to release next month and I’m just going to push myself because you can’t sit back and wait on anyone…without you pushing yourself, no one is gonna help you so easy,” the Layou resident said.
Deco J’s first soca competition was just last month, when he entered the Central Leeward Soca Monarch competition where he placed fourth with a song titled, “Vicious”.
As of June 30, that song had racked up over 1500 views on YouTube.
Deco J has extended thanks to everyone who has supported him on his journey so far.
Third place in this year’s Junior soca competition went to duo, Nickolyle Matthews and Jaelani Sandy of the JP Eustace Memorial Secondary School.
Other competitors in this year’s competition were Jonia Matthias of the Greiggs Primary School; D’Shanti Francis of the JP Eustace Memorial Secondary School; Kristell Warren of the Calder Government School and De’Andre Simmons of the St Martin’s Secondary School.
