Rhea reads to victory in Courts competition
St Vincent and the Grenadines will be represented at the Courts OECS Reading Competition by a student from the Windsor Primary School.
At the local finals of the competition, held last Friday at Frenches House in Kingstown, grade five student Rheanna Harry proved that she was the best reader in her age group, {{more}}when she out-performed six other students to earn the right to travel to Grenada for the regional competition on October 16.
The nine-year-old took top honours in the two rounds of competition, outclassing her rivals in the narrative reading of a short story entitled âThe Cracked Pot,â and in the reading of an article from SEARCHLIGHT titled âSVG wins ICT project of the year award.â
For winning the competition, Harry not only secured a place in the Grenada finals, but won herself $2,000, an opportunity to read a segment of the news on SVG TV, an Iview tablet donated by SEARCHLIGHT, a one-year e-subscription from SEARCHLIGHT newspaper, also examination/cleaning/ polishing and one filling if needed from Professional Family Dentistry and Oral Surgery, as well as cash towards a savings account from the law firm of Rochelle A Forde.
Placing second in the competition was Anelia Cato of the Kingstown Preparatory School, who won a cash prize of $1,000, a Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone with four months 4G data from LIME and cash towards a savings account from the Rochelle A Forde law firm.
Forde also provided money for a savings account to the third placed winner Brielle Compton of the Bequia Anglican Primary School, who placed third, and also won $750.
The other finalists were Zonique Williams of the Georgetown Primary School, Shamiah James of the Bequia Seventh Day Adventist Primary School, Kaje Jack of the Colonarie Government School, and Riana Blake of the Petersville Primary School.
All competitors received certificates of participation, trophies from Multigraphics, gift certificates from Accent Dental, gift baskets from CK Greaves and books from Jujube Bookstore.
The competition was organized by Courts St Vincent Ltd, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education. (JJ)
