Windward Women have slim chance of making it to Sunday’s finals

Today, Friday, May 9, 2025 will be a day of reckoning for four teams in the 2025 Cricket West Indies T20 Blaze Women Cricket Championships currently being played in St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG).

Jamaica Women, Leewards Islands Women, Trinidad and Tobago Women, and Windward Islands Women have all played four matches, each with two wins and two losses. The latest points standing shows that it is a mathematical nightmare as to who can possibly meet the Guyana Women in Sunday’s final, scheduled to be played at the Arnos Vale Cricket Ground from 2:30 p.m.

Hosts Windward Islands Women, have a slim chance of making it to Sunday’s final if they can defeat the Barbados Women by a large margin this evening, and the two other matches result in defeats by large margins for the other three teams in contention.

Jamaica Women have a total of 23 points inclusive of 11 bonus points, and a Net Run Rate of +1.282, with Leeward Islands Women on 21 points inclusive of 9 bonus points and a Net Run Rate of -0.260. Following is Trinidad and Tobago Women on 20 points inclusive of 8 bonus points, and a Net Run Rate of -0.284, while the Windward Islands Women are on 19 points inclusive of 7 bonus points, and a Net Run Rate of +0.480; superior to that of the Leeward Islands Women and Trinidad and Tobago Women.

Meanwhile on Wednesday May 7, Vincentian player Jeannelle Glasgow, played a pivotal role in ensuring that Windward Islands Women secured a chance albeit a slim one, of possibly making it to Sunday’s final with a 53-run defeat of the Leeward Islands Women.

First she shared in an 80-run first wicket partnership with Nerrissa Crafton, and was the fourth wicket to fall, Glasgow scoring 27 as the Windward Islands Women scored 127 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs. Crafton scored 52, and Ashlene Edward 14, while extras contributing 21.

Glasgow then returned with the ball in the Leeward Islands Women’ reply to grab 2 for 13 in her 4 overs as the Windward Islands Women registered their second consecutive victory. Leeward Islands Women 76 all out, with former Windward Islands Women player, Qiana Joseph, top-scoring with 17, Divya Saxena made 11, and Shawnisha Hector 10.

In addition to Glasgow, leg-spinner Afy Fletcher took 4 for 11, skipper Zaida James 2 for 22, Abini St Jean 1 for 4, and Niesha Cherry 1 for 15.

On Monday May 5, 2025, Windward Islands Women defeated Trinidad and Tobago Women by 3 wickets with 10 balls remaining. Batting first Trinidad and Tobago Women scored 72 for 8 in 20 overs, led by Britney Cooper with 20, and skipper Anisa Mohammed 11.

Bowling for Windward Islands Women, Selena Ross took 2 for 5, Zaida James 2 for 9, Afy Fletcher 2 for 10, and Niesha Cherry 1 for 16.

In reply Windward Islands Women finished on 73 for 7, led by Carena Noel with 25, and Earnisha Fontaine 11 not out.

For the Trinidad and Tobago Women, Anisa Mohammed took 3 for 12, Steffie Soogrim 2 for 13, Samara Ramnath 1 for 14, and Shalini Samaroo 1 for 15.

The Windward Islands Women lost their first two games on Thursday, May 1, 2025 when Jamaica defeated them by 7 wickets with 28 balls remaining; and on Saturday May 3, 2025 Guyana Women nudged them by 7 wickets with 6 balls remaining under the Duckworth/Lewis Method.
