Daughter of Vincentian mother heading to UK ‘Magic Circle’ law firm

A Vincentian mother who spent 10 years serving in the Royal Navy is celebrating the academic achievements of her daughter, Destiny Rose-Forde Kennedy, who recently graduated from the University of Oxford and is set to begin training with one of the United Kingdom’s leading law firms. Odinga Rose left St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), where she worked as a civil servant and joined the Royal Navy after learning they were recruiting Vincentian nationals.
“I just really wanted change, and obviously, it opened the world of going abroad,” Rose told SEARCHLIGHT in a telephone interview on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.
She migrated to the UK and joined the British Navy as a writer, an administrative role. During her 10 years of service, she was exposed to several opportunities and eventually obtained a British passport through her work. Rose said her experience in the Navy also opened doors for her education, and later contributed to her transition into teaching. However, while the Navy provided opportunities, it also meant spending long periods away from her daughter.
Rose said on one occasion she spent over six months away at sea, during which communication was limited. The separation was difficult for Rose. She eventually left the Navy after having her second daughter, choosing not to repeat the experience of being away from her children for extended periods.
“I’ve always wanted to be a mom. It was just something that I thought I would be great at,” Rose said.
