Opposition Senator expresses serious concern about “brazen” gun crimes
Opposition Senator Carlos James says the increasing frequency of gun-related incidents and homicides in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) is a serious concern that requires a national response.
James made the remarks on Star Radio on Tuesday, August 18, 2026 during a discussion with fellow Opposition Senator Keisal Peters, as he addressed recent incidents of gun violence across the country.
“What is taking place is of serious concern to all of us as citizens. These high incidents and very frequent incidents of gun related activity and homicides. It touches and concerns all of us as citizens. Our safety is at stake,” James said.
He said the seriousness of the situation is highlighted by the fact that people who are not involved in criminal activity can also become victims of gun violence. He referred to the recent shooting of a young woman who, according to his account, was caught in the crossfire while travelling from the area of the Grenadines Wharf.
James said the incident demonstrated that gun violence is no longer simply a matter of individuals involved in criminal activity targeting one another.
