New ACP Brenton Smith set to tackle gun violence in SVG
ACTING Commissioner of Police Trevor Bailey, said newly promoted Deputy Commissioner Acting Brenton Smith, has been assigned to take strategic command of the nation’s crime-fighting portfolio to directly tackle the surge in gun violence. That portfolio was previously discharged by Trevor Bailey who days ago, was moved up the rank from Deputy Commissioner to Acting Commissioner of Police.
The high-level appointment was officially announced during a Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF) media conference held yesterday, August 20, 2026. The briefing was called to address organizational restructuring and leadership changes in the wake of Commissioner of Police Enville Williams, and Deputy Commissioner, Frankie Joseph going on leave.
During the press conference, Acting Commissioner Bailey acknowledged that Vincentians are living in a time when the issue of gun violence is, understandably, causing concern throughout the country, particularly in Kingstown and its surrounding communities.
“Every shooting has consequences far beyond the immediate victim. Families are devastated, communities become fearful, businesses are affected, and a sense of security that every citizen [needs] to enjoy is undermined.”
Bailey assured citizens that the leadership within the police force fully recognizes the seriousness of the situation, and will not normalize gun violence.
“We will not accept a situation where persons believe that they can carry illegal firearms, discharge a weapon in communities, intimidate citizens, and take human life without consequences.”
