Former NDP Gov’t minister passes
This country has lost another former Member of Parliament with the death on Tuesday morning of Alpian Allen, who represented the constituency of North Leeward for three general election cycles- 1989, 1994 and 1998. Allen,who was 86, served within the New Democratic Party administration of Sir James Mitchell, deceased.
In is earliest days as MP he was Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Health, which he later headed as a full minister. Allen,who hailed from Coulls Hill in North Leeward and resided at Arnos Vale, also functioned in various other capacities in government including as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tourism and Information.
Many tributes have been paid to Allen, who was also an educator and a fully accredited Local Preacher in the Methodist Church.
“…his lifelong commitment to public service, education, and national development reflected a deep love for Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and its people,” a tribute from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade states in part.
“ The Ministry honours his legacy and joins the nation in mourning his passing, while recognizing and celebrating the invaluable contributions he made to the advancement of our people and country,” it added.
“Alpian was truly a son of the soil- a proud Coulls Hill man who dedicated himself to the advancement of North Leeward,” wrote Consul General to New York Roland “Patel” Matthews, who replaced Allen as the NDP North Leeward candidate for the 2001 general elections.
