Bailey was the first to cross the finish line at the Sion Hill intersection in the 60-mile Ron John Scrap Metal sponsored event, in a time of three hours 4 minutes 05 seconds.
This, after riding off from Howardâs Marine at Villa to Georgetown and returning to Mt Grenan, then back to Georgetown. He and the other cyclists then rode to the Roundabout in Arnos Vale, and journeyed back out to Diamonds, before ending at Sion Hill.
It was Baileyâs first win for 2014, having had to hide in the shadows of Adams, who had trumped the previous seven races.
Adams, however, was forced to drop out of the race after a leg injury flared up during the race. A dejected Adams stood at the bus stop at the intersection, as he watched Bailey pump the air in triumph.
Adams was seeking to reach nine successive wins to equal Albert Quammieâs record set a few years ago.
But veteran cyclist Peter Durrant ensured he notched his eighth straight win in the Over-40âs category. Durrant was second overall, finishing in three hours 8 minutes 36 seconds.
Durrant was trailed by Lucky Antrobus in three hours 8 minutes 42 seconds.
He was followed closely in fourth place by Randy Wilkinson, who clocked three hours 8 minutes 47 seconds. Antrobus placed second in the Under-40 and Wilkinson was third.
Deptor Culzac came in fifth overall and was fourth in the Under-40 segment in three hours 15 minutes 55 seconds.
Other cyclists who completed the race were Over-40âs – Orel George, Steve Ollivierre and Martin Bollers, while Desmond Cox, riding in the Under-40 category endured to the end. (RT)
