Blondie Bird Eyes Fourth Consecutive Title Despite Challenges (+Video)
THREE-TIME defending Carnival Band of theYear Blondie Bird and Friends Mas Band, is hoping to extend its winning streak this year despite ongoing challenges sourcing the materials needed to create its costumes. Co-owner of the band, Garth Niles, says preparations for Vincy Mas 2026 are well underway as the group works towards another competitive presentation. However, he noted that obtaining the raw materials necessary for costume production remains one of the biggest obstacles facing traditional mas bands in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG). Speaking to SEARCHLIGHT on Friday June 5, 2026, Niles said “the raw materials are limited in terms of getting them in St Vincent”. He explained that while some supplies can be sourced locally, many of the materials required to construct costumes must be imported from overseas, adding to both the cost and complexity of production.
The band, which employs approximately 10 persons, relies heavily on materials obtained from Trinidad and Miami to complete the costumes. Niles said that although importing these supplies is necessary, it can place additional pressure on the band’s resources as members work to meet deadlines ahead of carnival.
He also highlighted the role played by local businessman Faez Moussa, whom he described as one of the key suppliers of materials to mas bands throughout SVG.
