NDP behaves as though PS appointments are immense achievements – Gonsalves
WHILE former Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves congratulated the newly appointed Permanent Secretaries, he said that the New Democratic Party(NDP) is behaving as though being appointed to such a role is an immense achievement.
Gonsalves, who was addressing the matter on June 10, during his radio programme ‘Morning Comrade with: Ralph Gonsalves’ on Star Radio, said that there has been some buzz with persons who have been appointed as Acting Permanent Secretaries.
“Let me say this.Throughout the…near 25 years that I’ve been in government and in governments before…the Public Service Commission(PSC) under our watch, and in particular for permanent secretaries, where there’s a role for the Prime Minister… the PSC appointed dozens upon dozens of permanent secretaries, and it is a cause of celebration in the individual cases.”
However, he said that the NDP government is behaving as though it is an immense achievement to have people appointed either as Permanent Secretaries or Acting Permanent Secretaries.
“You have to have a permanent secretary in the ministry, and the personnel department. The Chief Personnel Officer(CPO)’s office will be dealing with this in conjunction with the various ministries and with the Cabinet Secretary, who is head of the public service.”
Gonsalves added that he does not know how this is seen as some achievement of the NDP government to have permanent secretaries appointed.
