Dr J.P. Eustace Memorial leave St Martin’s in tears

In rare scenes for a passion of football, the students of the St Martin’s Secondary School’s Under-16 team were reduced to tears last Friday afternoon, as they were prostrate at the Victoria Park.{{more}}

This mood continued in the dressing room, as some teachers joined in to sob with them.

This state of consolation and glum expressions were after they saw their chances of lifting the title disappear, having been defeated by the Dr J.P. Eustace Memorial (DJPEM) in the final.

Items from Kemuel Peters and Azara Browne were enough for the Dr J.P. Eustace Memorial to jump and shout, as their mood was the complete opposite.

No one more so than the team’s coach – Keron Peters, who said : “ … I am elated because the guys put in a lot of work since last year’s defeat .. The guys had only one thing in sight – the trophy.”

For their efforts, Dr J.P. Eustace Memorial added another piece of silverware, having earlier copped the Tyrone “Tweety” Spence trophy for their 2-nil win over the St Vincent Grammar School in the opening match,which featured the previous year’s finalists.

These go along with the trophy gained for topping Zone C of the preliminaries.

Last Friday was also a reprieve for the Dr J.P. Eustace Memorial, who were at the losing end in the 2012 final, as the St Vincent Grammar School squeezed them out 1- nil.

Before reaching the final, DJPEM saw off the St Vincent Grammar School in the semi-finals on kicks from the penalty spot, after both drew 2-2 in regulation time.

At the other end of the 2013 finalists, it was the second defeat for St Martin’s in two visits to the final in three years.

St Martin’s went under to Central Leeward, also 2-nil, when both met in the title match in 2011.

In getting another shot at the title, St Martin’s Secondary edged out Sandy Bay Secondary one-nil in the semi-finals.

Dethroned champion the St Vincent Grammar School earned the third spot with a 2-nil whipping of the Sandy Bay Secondary. (RT)
