The second edition of the firms and industrial Breakaway Masters Football competition opened on Saturday at the Grammar School Playing Field.{{more}}

This year’s competition has attracted more teams, as well as an additional title sponsor in Aeropost, along with Digicel, the lone sponsor in the inaugural competition.

Also, the organisers have decided to dedicate the competition to the late La Fern Millington, a former member of the Breakaway Masters organisation, and an indefatigable servant of national football and netball. Millington passed away earlier this year.

And, more teams have grasped the opportunity to be part of the fun.

Among the new entrants are Tony Combine Stores, Bonadie’s Ltd, Media Corporation, C.K. Greaves, Layne’s Ltd, General Post Office, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, and Facey Trading SVG Ltd.

The increased participation has resulted in organisers placing the 22 registered teams into three groups.

Group 1 has defending league winner Vinlec, along with Digicel, Tony Combine Stores, Bonadie’s Ltd, and Media Corporation.

Group 2 has defeated finalist in both competitions last year, Transport and Works, along with Customs and Finance, Courts SVG, General Post Office, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education.

Coreas/Hazells Inc, SVG Port Authority, St Vincent Brewery, Facey Trading SVG Ltd, Karib Cable, CWSA, C.K. Greaves and Layne’s Ltd are in Group 3.

Notable absentees from this year’s line-up are Combined Banks and last year’s Knockout winners, Prime Minister’s Office.

In matches played on Saturday and Sunday as the competition began in earnest, Karib Cable beat Layne’s 2-1, Courts SVG Ltd and Customs and Finance drew 0-0. Vinlec edged out ECGC — 3-2, while Toney’s Combine Stores defeated Bonadie’s 5-1. CWSA got past C.K. Greaves — 3-0 and Ministry of Education whipped Transport and Works — 3-1.

Matches last one hour and are slated to be played daily at the Grammar School Playing Field. (RT)
