Barrouallie woman wants Mental Health policy review after brother’s attack
A resident of Barrouallie said there is need for urgent reforms to the way that psychiatric conditions are managed in St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), following the cutlass chopping of her 70-year-old brother allegedly by a man believed to be suffering from mental illness.
In an interview with SEARCHLIGHT on Monday, July 20, 2026, Weena Roberts recounted the terrifying ordeal her brother, Patrick Roberts, experienced on Saturday, July 18, 2026 and said she believes stronger policies are needed to protect innocent members of the public from violent incidents involving persons with unmanaged psychiatric conditions. Roberts said her brother, who lives in Barrouallie, was making his way through the park in the community during the early hours of Saturday morning when he noticed a man following him.
“My brother tell me he was going through the park in Barrouallie and he saw this guy following him and then he turned to ask the guy why he was following him,” she related. Roberts said her brother usually leaves home very early in the morning to travel to Bottle and Glass, Barrouallie,to fish. He told her after asking the man why he was following him, her brother continued walking before suddenly coming under attack.
