GECCU disburses $thousands in bursaries and scholarships
The General Employees’ Co-operative Credit Union (GECCU) has awarded 199 bursaries and 14 scholarships to successful students in the 2026 Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment (CPEA).
The financial institution’s 24 annual scholarship disbursement ceremony was held at the Kingstown Methodist Church Hall on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, under the theme “The Courage to Dream, Soar, and Thrive”, bringing together students, parents, educators, credit union officials and other invited guests to celebrate academic excellence and encourage continued educational achievement. Each one-off bursary is valued at EC$175, amounting to a total investment of EC$34,825; while scholarship recipients will receive financial assistance throughout each academic year.
Delivering remarks at the ceremony, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GECCU, Maxine Richards-Johnney, said the credit union’s commitment to education spans more than four decades and continues to be one of the organisation’s most significant investments in the nation’s future. “GECCU’S investment in education is not now. Our scholarship programme began in 1981 with just two scholarships.”
