Former GECCU Scholar urges new recipients to move forward with courage
Former General Employees’ Co-operative Credit Union (GECCU) scholarship recipient and now Barrister-at-Law, Kaylia Toney, has encouraged the 2026 scholarship recipients to approach the next stage of their educational journey with courage.
Toney delivered the keynote address at GECCU’s 24th Annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony, held at the Kingstown Methodist Church Hall on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, where she reflected on her own journey from scholarship recipient to legal professional, while offering words of inspiration to this year’s awardees. Addressing the students, Toney reminded them that the ceremony represented more than the presentation of scholarships and bursaries, it is the beginning of a journey filled with opportunities and possibilities.
“Today is about you, it is about where your journey could take you if you have the courage to dream, the courage to soar, the courage to thrive.”
Reflecting on the event’s theme, Toney said courage is a quality that is frequently spoken about but often misunderstood. She said that while many people hear the word regularly, few truly pause to consider the role it plays in shaping their future.
“I believe that courage is one of the most important qualities we can possess because it shapes the choices that we make, the opportunities that we embrace and ultimately the lives that we build,” she told the 14 scholarship recipients. Toney encouraged them to be intentional about their goals by clearly defining what they hope to accomplish and to develop practical plans to achieve them.
