Computec/Comsports Vincy Masters conquers Breakaway

Computec/ Comsports Vincy Masters earned the right last Sunday night at the Victoria Park, to be crowned the 2010 National Lotteries Authority SVG Over 35 Masters Champion.{{more}}

It was a battle of the heavy weights, as both Vincy Masters and Breakaway emerged unbeaten going into the final.

Both headed their groups in the preliminary round and got through the quarter finals unscathed.

Breakaway blanked Je Belle, 3-0, and Vincy Masters drubbed Scotia Bank South Leeward, 5-0.

While Vincy Masters cruised to a 3-0 win over Calliaqua last week Friday night, Breakaway had to sweat to get past a spirited Layou Masters.

Breakaway won 2-1 on penalties after the match had ended 2-2 in regulation time, setting up last Sunday’s finale.

Last Sunday, Vincy Masters did most of the early running, but it was a goal less first half, as their forwards were guilty of squandering the chances that presented them.

But early in the second half, Rohan Keizer, the competition’s top goal scorer, added another to his tally, when he eluded Breakaway’s defence to beat Urtis Blackette in goal.

With the match heading for a likely one nil margin, a defence blunder by Cornelius Huggins, late in the piece, allowed Wayne Matthews to equalise. But on the stroke of regulation time, Anthony Sam made a charge down the left flank to give Alwyn “Porpey” Guy a perfect cross which he nodded into the goal to give his team a 2-1 win and $3000.

Breakaway collected $2000, and Calliaqua United, who earlier in the evening beat Layou, 4-3, retained their third place and walked away with $1000.

Calliaqua’s goal keeper, Gosnel Cupid, was voted the best goal keeper, with Scotia Bank South Leeward, the most spirited team prize.

President of the SVG Over 35’s organisation, Glenroy “Sulle” Caesar, during the presentation ceremony called on teams to bring back to fun into Masters’ Football, as he thought this year’s competition was too serious and competitive.

Caesar also lamented on the need for the players to desist from questioning the officials’ decision.

With the Vincentian chapter of Masters Football closed for 2010, many local footballers over the age of 40 will head to Barbados soon to be part of that island’s annual Masters Football Festival. (RT)
