Major upsets in VINLEC 20X20 Cricket Competition

There were major upsets over the weekend as teams secured their places in the finals of the 2007 Vinlec North Leeward 20X20 Cricket Competition. Defending champion Peto Stars crashed out of the competition as they were defeated by Somerset. North Stars, having won the preliminary round, were also booted out of the competition by President Klick.{{more}}

On Saturday, President Klick had to prove their worth against Hill Top Classics to gain a semi-final place. Hill Top Classics were dismissed for 105 off 12.2 overs: Renrick Richards 38, Adonel Stapleton 23.

Henry Harry 4 for 19 and Alex Harry 2 for 9 restricted Hill Top Classics to a meager total. President Klick in reply wasted no time in scoring 106 for 4 off 9.2 overs, Orville Franklyn 46 laid the foundation for an easy victory for President Klick.

In the first Semi-final game on Sunday, Ronique LaBorde, (right) 19 years old, recorded the highest individual score in the Vinlec North Leeward 20X20 Cricket Competition to date. He slammed 127 not out (10 fours & 9 sixes) carrying his bat through the innings and batting for Peto Stars. This was in a loosing cause though as Somerset defeated Peto Stars by 2 wickets in a high scoring encounter.

Peto Stars posted a total of 211 for 2 off 20 overs, Sheldon Hooper 58, Ronique LaBorde 127 not out. The large crowd on hand, mainly from the Petit Bordel community was of the view that the score was a winning total, however, as the saying goes, never say never. Somerset replied strongly reaching their target of 218 for 8 off 19.1 overs: Hank Hall 36, Ethron Bowens 37 not out, Milton Trumpet 38 and Nelson Williams 54 all making valuable contributions with the bat.

Ronique LaBorde 2 for 22 and taking a superb catch, Rohan LaBorde 3 for 36 and Orland Hooper 2 for 34 could not stop Somerset from romping to victory.

In the other semi-final game President Klick defeated North Stars by 6 wickets to power their way into the finals.

North Stars who seemed to be overwhelmed by the excitement of the earlier game, just did not find their usual rhythm and were dismissed for a paltry 125 off 14.1 overs. Ronjel Small 19 was the only score of some merit, but far below his own ability. Leon McAlaster must have enjoyed his returns taking 4 for 48, Mayor Edwards bowling with great hostility took 3 for 30.

President Klick 128 for 4 off 13.1 overs. Orville Franklyn, the veteran, stabilized matters in the middle with patience 42 to ensure that there was no middle order collapse. William Edwards 21 not out at the end. Calrick Ferdinand took 2 for 24.

Every thing is now in place for an exciting finals on Sunday 26 August 07. Spectators are eagerly anticipating a keen contest between two evenly matched teams. Somerset with their large following from Fitz Hughes and President Klick with their home crowd support from Rose Bank, a village rich in culture, is expected to be at Petit Bordel in their numbers. The game commences at 11:00 am.
