Quarry operations in Richmond may come under review
Minister of Tourism and Parliamentary Representative for North Leeward, Dr. Kishore Shallow, says efforts will be made to address concerns surrounding the ongoing quarry operations in Richmond, citing objections from community members, and potential negative impacts on future development projects in the area.
Shallow made the comments during a community meeting held on Tuesday, June 9, 2026 at the Learning Resource Centre in Golden Grove, Chateaubelair, where residents gathered to discuss mining and other issues in the Roseau River Valley and surrounding communities. During the discussion, the minister indicated that he intends to examine alternatives that could lead to the cessation of quarrying activities in Richmond.
The multi-million quarry project is being undertaken by the St Lucia company Rayneau Construction and Industrial Equipment of St Lucia, that has a 30-year lease covering around 59 acres of land. Shallow noted that many residents have expressed discomfort with the operation and concerns about its environmental impact.
