Former PM Gonsalves signals transition from active politics
FORMER PRIME MINISTER of St.Vincent and the Grenadines, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, has officially signalled a strategic shift in his storied career. Addressing the Jamaica Observer Press Club last Wednesday, the veteran statesman announced that while he prepares to transition away from frontline electoral politics, he is intensifying his commitment to the global movement for reparatory justice.
As he approaches his 80th birthday this August, Dr. Gonsalves emphasized that he has no intention of fading into the background.
Instead, he is pivoting toward a more active role as a senior adviser to the Repair Campaign, an international initiative launched in 2022 to support the Caricom Reparations Commission (CRC).The movement seeks justice for the historical legacies of slavery, indigenous genocide, and colonial exploitation in the Caribbean.
During his address, Dr. Gonsalves described the fight for re parations as a “great cause” that demands unwavering certainty from its leaders. He expressed that his decades of experience as a lawyer, social scientist, and head of government provide him with the technical skills and regional relationships necessary to bridge the gap between advocacy groups, academic institutions, and international bodies. He noted that the movement is a multifaceted effort that requires the synchronized participation of civil society and regional leadership.
Regarding his domestic political future, Dr. Gonsalves indicated a clear readiness for leadership transition within the Unity Labour Party (ULP).While he remains a dedicated member of the party, he stated he would not encourage the ULP to select him for another general election.
