More Than a Challenge: Young Vincentian GHS Girls Inspire Through Craft and Culture
WHAT BEGAN as part of the 2026 Shafia London Business Challenge has grown into something far deeper ; a movement rooted in purpose, culture, and opportunity.
Students of the Girls’ High School, through their initiative D’ Hairouna Essence, hosted a hands-on creative experience that brought children together in a space filled with colour, laughter, and learning on Thursday, April 9, 2026.
Participants from the age of 4 to 14 years engaged in bracelet making, painting, and tie-dye which are all simple crafts with powerful meaning. These young organisers are not simply completing a business project; they are responding to a real need they identified in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. They believe that local craft is not just a hobby, but a pathway to self-employment, independence, and economic survival.
Through this initiative, they are showing that practical skills can become income- generating opportunities, especially for young people seeking alternative ways to support themselves. While the Challenge
promotes entrepreneurship, this group has gone beyond expectations. They are focusing not only on profit, but on impact.
The event also embraced the spirit of Easter, featuring an exciting egg hunt that added joy and tradition to the experience. The result was more than an activity. It was a meaningful and memorable day. One participant, Adean Diamond, echoed loudly, “This is the best day ever!” -a sentiment shared by many, as several children expressed that they did not want the day to end.
The students of D’ Hairouna Essence have extended sincere thanks to all who supported the initiative: parents, mentors, and community members whose encouragement made the event a success. (Iesha Richardson)
