Time’s up! Police to fully enforce traffic laws
The extension granted to drivers to comply with road traffic regulations has expired, and the next step will be enforcement. Sergeant Phillip King from the Traffic Branch of the Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force’s (RSVGPF) told SEARCHLIGHT on Thursday, May 8, 2025 that the time to comply with traffic laws has expired, “and the police will be clamping down on motorists who are in violation of those regulations which [they]were given an extension to“. The initial deadline for compliance with a range of traffic matters was extended to May 30, 2025.
Though it is yet early to give precise numbers of drivers and owners who are complying, King said that approximately 20% are still in violation of road rules.
“There are no further extensions,” Phillip emphasised, adding that road users will again see an increased presence of traffic police along the roadways.
Following a slate of complaints, and evidence of violations, some of which were captured on videos the Commissioner of Police, acting in his capacity as the head of the Licensing Authority had given motorists between Friday, March 21, and Friday, April 3, 2025 to comply with the current traffic laws. However, an extension of almost three weeks was granted to give those in violation more time to make the necessary changes.
In their initial statement published in March, 2025, the RSVGPF outlined the areas for compliance; these having to do with tinted wind shields, license plates, insurance, minibus passenger loads, coloured and bright headlights, and amplified music.
The police statement also outlined the current laws in place to guide individuals on how these issues should be addressed and sought full cooperation.
