My absence won’t affect quality of show – Skinny Fabulous

Thousands of persons eagerly anticipate Gamal ‘Skinny Fabulous’ Doyle’s performance at the annual Soca Monarch competition, but according to the entertainer, his decision to stay out of competition was the right one and will in no way impact the quality of the show.{{more}}

Doyle, who also won the Ragga Soca competition last year, his first time competing in it and the Soca Monarch competition for the sixth time, told SEARCHLIGHT that as an entertainer, it cannot be a case where he takes part in the competition forever.

“It cannot be a case where I do Soca Monarch forever, until the day I die. You have to pay respect to the platform that gave myself and it will give other artistes a lot of exposure and the creative confidence to take on a stage at home and to take on a stage abroad, but at some point in time, you have to step away from it, even if it just temporarily and you have to let it grow,” opined Doyle.

The prolific entertainer, who is considered a superstar, stressed that his decision to not defend the crowns is in no way a disregard for fans, local culture, or for music and that this will in no way take away from the competition.

“I don’t think that the standard of the competition … will get lower with my absence and I think by now that everybody looks at Soca Monarch as a place … where you go to see peoples’ creative genius and I think this year we will also see some of this creative genius from the finalists in the competition and I have all confidence that it will still be a dynamic and magnificent show.”

When asked about his pick to take the 2016 Soca Monarch crown, Doyle answered, “as a cultural ambassador and a so-called face of Vincentian music, I do not want to put my mouth and say or give an opinion on who I think will or should win, because I think that I would also get crucified by the other artistes for saying that. But all I would tell the Vincy public, when they go to Victoria Park is, just do the right thing,” Doyle said smiling.(LC)
