St Vincent and the Grenadines recorded a 75 per cent pass rate in the May/June 2015 Caribbean Examination Council Secondary Education Certificate Examinations (CSEC), an improvement over last year’s 71 per cent.

A release from the Ministry of Education said according to the preliminary results received on August 13, 18.22 per cent of the passes were at Grade I level, 36.38 per cent at Grade II and 45.40 per cent at Grade III.{{more}}

This year, 3,013 candidates were registered. Of these, 1,479 were private candidates and 1,534 were school candidates.

There were 1,508 candidates sitting 10,509 subject entries in 34 subject areas, from 26 secondary schools.

There were five schools which recorded percentage pass rates of 80 per cent or more. These schools are: the Girls’ High School (98.27 per cent), the St Vincent Grammar School (94.41 per cent), the St Joseph’s Convent, Kingstown (91.48 per cent), the Thomas Saunders Secondary (87.30 per cent) and Bishop’s College (80.28 per cent).

Thirteen schools obtained creditable pass rates between 60 per cent and 80 per cent. These are:

1 ST JOSEPH’S CONVENT (MARRIAQUA) 76.56 per cent

2 ST MARTIN’S SECONDARY SCHOOL 73.51 per cent

3 MOUNTAIN VIEW ADVENTIST ACADEMY 71.01 per cent

4 WEST ST GEORGE SECONDARY SCHOOL 70.20 per cent

5 BUCCAMENT BAY SECONDARY SCHOOL 70.10 per cent

6 INTERMEDIATE HIGH SCHOOL 69.10 per cent

7 ADELPHI SECONDARY SCHOOL 68.10 per cent

8 ST CLAIR DACON SECONDARY SCHOOL 66.85 per cent

9 NORTH UNION SECONDARY SCHOOL 64.90 per cent

10 BEQUIA SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST SCHOOL 64.49 per cent

11 EMMANUEL HIGH SCHOOL MESOPOTAMIA 61.84 per cent

12 UNION ISLAND SECONDARY SCHOOL 61.56 per cent

13 BARROUALLIE SECONDARY SCHOOL 61.03 per cent.

The school which recorded the most significant improvement over the previous year is the Buccament Bay Secondary School, whose pass rate increased from 51.08 per cent in 2014 to 70.10 per cent in 2015. This represents a 19.02 per cent increase.

“The Ministry of Education congratulates all students and extends gratitude to the principals, teachers and staff at all schools for their support of the students. We are cognizant of the fact that outcomes in education are measured, not only in quantitative terms, but also in qualitative terms; therefore, the value added to the lives of the students, the top performers, as well as those whose performance can be improved, is generally appreciated.

“All principals continue to work diligently in conjunction with the Ministry of Education in support of their school’s effectiveness and the students’ success,” the release from the Ministry said.
