Taiwan hands over more money for public library

The Republic of China on Taiwan has once again proven itself to be a loyal friend to St Vincent and the Grenadines.

This time it has done so by handing over a cheque of EC$2.5 million towards the Modern Library Complex at Richmond Hill.{{more}}

The project, which has several different components, is termed by Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonslaves as an “educational edifice”. He went on to say that a “civilization without a modern library is limited,” and the complex would be used for the “advancement of education and

culture”.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Dr Gonslaves stated that the National Archives, the rebuilding of the YWCA building and the modern Technical Centre at the Bishop’s College compound are part of the Library

project.

Prime Minister Gonsalves said that when he and the Premier of Taiwan symbolically broke the ground in 2001, it was the start of the modern library project and the ancillary aspect of the project.

The project is expected to cost EC$33 million.

Ambassador Jack Cheng said that the library, when completed, will be the “best equipped library in the region, and its magnificent beauty would be a landmark in St Vincent and the Grenadines”.

Cheng added that he is happy to hand over the cheque and the ceremony is a good opportunity to show Taiwan’s and St Vincent and the Grenadines “commitment to strengthen their relations”.

The modern library, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year, will on completion also include a lecture theatre and conference facility. It is being constructed by OECC Construction Company. TVA is the consulting architect. (VM)
