Rockies woman apologises for theft
A ROCKIESWOMAN, who apologised to the police for stealing a dozen eggs and less than a pound of onions from Coreas Supermarket, was given a suspended sentence and ordered to pay compensation. Naomi Nero, 61, appeared at the Serious Offences Court before Chief Magistrate Colin John, on December 1, 2025, where she was sentenced for stealing one dozen eggs valued EC$11.21 and 0.65lbs of red onions, valued EC$5.33; a total value EC$16.54 on December, 29 2025, the property of Coreas Food Mart, Kingstown.
The facts are that Theo Mc Allister is employed as a security officer at Coreas Food Mart. Mc Allister is responsible for guarding the store and preventing persons from stealing items from the Mini Mart.
On the date in question at about 4:45 p.m, Mc Allister was on duty at the aforementioned Mini Mart when he was notified by an unknown customer that Nero had taken up took up the eggs and red onions. Mc Allister kept Nero under observation and saw her go past the cashier holding the items in her hand, then went to the baggage area to collect a bag.
After a while, Nero walked to the exit door and went outside where she was approached by Mc Allister, who took her back into the Mini Mart.
The matter was reported to the police; PC 20 Blugh entertained the report and visited the scene. On arrival the officer identified himself to Nero as a police officer dressed in plain clothes and arrested her on suspicion of theft.
Mc Allister also handed over the items to PC Blugh which the officer kept in his possession as exhibits. On arrival at the police station, PC Blugh showed Nero CCTV footage of the incident.
The woman acknowledged it was she in the CCTV footage and stated “ah sorry”. PC Blugh cautioned and interviewed Nero in the presence of PC 979 Jack.
She then volunteered a statement in writing admitting to the offence. Later the same day, PC Blugh arrested and charged Nero for the offence theft.
In court, Nero, who has several previous convictions for theft, was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for one year.
She was also ordered to compensate Coreas for the items immediately or spend one month in prison.
