Dr. Gonsalves says AIA never downgraded under ULP
OPPOSITION LEADER Dr. Ralph Gonsalves says the Argyle International Airport (AIA), under his Unity Labour Party (ULP) administration, has never had to cancel a flight because of runway issues. Last Sunday, December 7, 2025 management of the Argyle International Airport (AIA) took a precautionary decision to temporarily limit the operating weight of aircraft using the runway to allow for repair works to be conducted.
This was done as the ongoing issue of holes appearing in the runway caused the cancellation of a Virgin Atlantic flight.
Following the successful completion of the runway works, normal runway operations were fully restored on Monday, December 8, 2025.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, December 10, 2025 at the Office of the Leader of the Opposition located at the Unity Labour Party’s (ULP) headquarters along the Richmond Hill main road, Dr. Gonsalves said had the government been “curious”, the Virgin Atlantic flight would not have been suspended.
