Dember could not save Volcanoes

Vincentian off-spinner, Kenneth Dember took 5 for 95 in 33.5 overs for the Windward Islands Volcanoes in the Jamaica Scorpions’ second innings of their opening game of the West Indies 4-day regional championship.

However, his performance with the ball was unable to stave off defeat as the Volcanoes lost by 175 runs at the Arnos Vale Cricket Grounds on Saturday afternoon, February 1, 2025.

Batting first, the Jamaicans were all out in their first innings for 337, with discarded middle order Test batsman, Jermaine Blackwood scoring 109; captain, John Campbell 79; and Daniel Beckford 39.

Bowling for the Windward Islands, Darel Cyrus scalped 2 for 26; Gilon Tyson had 2 for 66; and Darius Martin picked up 2 for 74. Ryan John, Kenneth Dember, Shadrack Descarte, and Keron Cottoy all picked up a wicket apiece.

In their response to the Jamaica Scorpions’ first innings total, Volcanoes were dismissed for 195, as Odean Smith and Jermaine Blackwood had six scalps between them. Ryan John made 41; Shadrack Descarte, 34; and Stephan Pascal, 30.

Jermaine Blackwood took 3 for 27; Odean Smith 3 for 5. Marquino Mindley, Jeavor Royal, and Brad Barnes each took a wicket.

With a first innings lead of 142, Jamaica, rocked by Dember’s off-spin, declared the inning closed at 277 for 7.

Blackwood made 75; Daniel Beckford 50; and Kirk McKenzie made 46. Kenneth Dember took 5 for 95, and Shadrack Descarte supported with 2 for 36.

Faced with a target of 419 on a pitch still good for batting, the Windward Islands Volcanoes fell short by 175 runs, being all out for 241.

Skipper, Sunil Ambris top-scored with 56, Shadrack Descarte 47, Stephan Pascal 32, and Keron Cottoy 31.

Two spinners did a tag team job on the hosts. Leg-spinner, Tamarie Redwood was the architect of the destruction with figures of 15.1 overs, 1 maiden, 72 runs, 7 wickets; while left-arm orthodox spinner, Jeavor Royal took the other two wickets for 81 runs.

The Windward Islands Volcanoes’ next encounter is a pink ball game against the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force from February 5 – 8, 2025 at the Arnos Vale Cricket Grounds.
