Ralph Gonsalves speaks unity to PNM in Trinidad
There will be dissonances because my brother… [Colm] Imbert, [former Finance Minister], there are dissonances in every symphony. And how do we deal with those dissonances? We deal with those from our customs, our values, our relations as peoples,” stated Dr. Ralph Gonsalves when he addressed the People’s National Movement pre-Independence activity on Sunday, August 30, 2026 at City Hall.
Issuing a call for national unity, he warned against the dangerous political practice of pitting ethnic groups against each another. He spoke on the inherent complexities of building a modern society, and argued that societal friction was a natural condition of human civilisation, but stressed that domestic institutions, not division, must resolve those conflicts.
“And when we can’t solve those dissonances in that way, we go to the Parliament or we go to the law courts, to formal institutions. What we do not do is to pit one ethnic group against each other, because that is the position of colonialism, of divide and rule,” added the veteran regional political figure who was welcomed to the PNM event by its leader, Pennelope Beckles.
