Bequia Basketball Tournament ends on cue

The eleventh Annual Bequia Basketball Tournament came to a close last Sunday night, as scheduled, at the Clive Tannis Hard Court in Bequia.{{more}}

Young Blazers and Duke emerged winners in the weekend’s matches to be crowned Second and First Division champions, respectively.

On Saturday, Young Blazers defeated Young Duke 71 to 65 to close out the series two nil.

For Young Blazers, Mark Hutchins had 17 points, and 13 rebounds, and the leading scorer for Young Duke was Damien Lewis with 27.

Also on Saturday night, in the First Division, Bequia Tech Rising Stars defeated Duke 74 to 72 to tie the series 1-1 and force a game 3, with Craiglee Sam 28 points, and 14 rebounds, and for Duke, Keithroy Lavia, 21.

Duke rebounded impressively in game three on Sunday to win 72 to 57 to clinch the title and win the 2009 championship trophy, closing out the tournament 2 two games to one.

Duke’s Otice Lewis had 24 points, and Sam with 18 for Bequia Tech.

In the Prize Giving Ceremony which followed Sunday’s final, the overall Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the Under-16 Division was Garfield Sargeant of Warriaz. Sargeant recorded the Most Points and Most Rebounds. Also in that division, Jimmy France of Hornets had the Most Steals, and Mark Dublin, also of Hornets, the Most Assists. Damien Stowe had the Most Block shots.

The other MVP’s in the Under-16 were Orlando Blugh of Young Wizards and Damien Bynoe of Eagles. Keylon Edwards of Young Wizards accepted the prize for the Under-16 winning Coach.

Lewis of Young Duke took the MVP award in the Second Division. Lewis secured the awards for the Most Points, Most Blocks and the Most Rebounds, as well as his team’s MVP.

Clemson Williams of Warriaz collected the awards for the most steals and assists. He was also his team’s MVP. Devon Pollard was adjudged the Most Improved Player.

Copping the MVP for Rising Stars Two was Nyron Boucher and Hutchins for Young Blazers. The Winning Coach of Second Division was Cornelius Farrell of Young Blazers

Sam of Bequia Tech secured the award of MVP in the First Division and for his team. Sam recorded the Most Points, the Most Blocks and the Most Rebounds. Keylon Edwards of East Blazers had the Most Steals, with Colin Blugh of Gladaitorz the Most Assists. Blugh was adjudged his team’s MVP. Jonas King copped the MVP title for Duke. Lamont Gordon was voted the Most Improved Player in the First Division. The Rookie of the Year was Cosumus Hackshaw. The Winning Coach of First Division was Duke’s Seneca McIntosh.
