BVI to host top CXC awards

The British Virgin Islands will host the Regional Top Awards Presentation Ceremony and 41st meeting of the Caribbean Examinations Council on December 3 and 4, respectively.{{more}}

The council meeting is slated for the Treasure Isle Hotel, while the awards ceremony will take place at the HLS Community College.

The annual meeting of the School Examinations Committee (SEC) will also be hosted on December 3 at the Treasure Isle Hotel.

Minister of Education and Culture Andrew Fahie will address the opening ceremony and declare the Council Meeting officially open on Thursday night. Professor Nigel Harris, Chairman of CXC, and Dr Didacus Jules, Registrar of CXC will also address the ceremony.

On Thursday night, awards will be presented to eight outstanding performers in the May/June 2009 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations and seven outstanding performers in the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE).

Kia Persaud of the Queen’s College, Guyana, will receive the award for the Most Outstanding Candidate Overall in the Region in CSEC; Padminee Roshundatt, also of Queen’s College, Guyana, will receive the award the Most Outstanding Performance in Sciences; Norman Tai of York Castle High School, Jamaica, will receive the award Most Outstanding Performance in the Technical/Vocational Education; Sonya Yacoob of New Amsterdam Multilateral High School, Guyana, will receive the award for the Most Outstanding Performance in Business Education; Jovelle Lewis of Holy Name Convent, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, will receive the award for the Most Outstanding Performance in the Humanities; Shantal Pellington of Excelsior High School, Jamaica, will receive the award for the Best Short Story written in the English A examination; Theresa Cann of the Bishop Gibson High School, Jamaica, will receive the award for the Most Outstanding Performance in Visual Art 2-Dimensional Work, and Karishma Dhera of Government Secondary School, Montserrat, will receive the award for the Most Outstanding Performance in Visual Art 3-Dimensional Work.

For the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE), Rashad Brathwaite of Harrison College, Barbados, will received the Dennis Irvine Award as well as the awards for the Most Outstanding Performance in Modern Languages and the Most Outstanding Performance in the Humanities; Alisia Sheppard, also of Harrison College, Barbados, will receive the award for the Most Outstanding Performance in Technical Studies; Kenny Huang of Campion College, Jamaica, will receive the award for Most Outstanding Performance in Information and Communication Technology; Stuart Deoraj of Presentation College, Chaguanas, Trinidad and Tobago, will receive the award for the Most Outstanding Performance in Mathematics; Kiron Neale of Presentation College, San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago, will receive the award for the Most Outstanding Performance in Environmental Science; Chantal Cave of St Joseph’s Convent, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, will receive the award for the Most Outstanding Performance in Natural Science; and Shivana Sharma of Lakshmi Girls’ Hindu College, Trinidad and Tobago, will receive the award for the Most Outstanding Performance in Business Education.

While in the BVI, the students, along with CXC officials, will pay courtesy calls on Governor David Pearey, Deputy Governor V Inez Archibald, and the education minister.

The council comprises representatives of 16 Participating Territories, the University of the West Indies, the University of Guyana and the teaching profession. It deals with finance and administrative issues, while the SEC deals with technical and examination issues.
