C&W launches new directory

WHEN YOU ARE paralyzed from your neck down it is hard to find many things to get excited about, but former West Indies speedster Winston Davis has been provided with a small spark of joy by Cable & Wireless.

For the next year, Davis, 49, who was injured when he fell from a tree in 1998, would be able to speak to his elderly mother Olive in Sion Hill from England free of charge.{{more}}

Cable & Wireless’ marketing manager, Fitzgerald Huggins made the announcement last Monday at the launching of the 20072008 Services Directory, which has been dedicated to eight Vincentian cricketers who have played international cricket.

Speaking at the launch, fittingly held at the president’s suite of the newly renovated Arnos Vale Sporting Complex, Huggins said that the concept for the directory was welcomed and appreciated by all the players honoured. He said they all agreed that the special gift to Winston Davis should also be a part of the project.

“I asked him how often he speaks to his mother and he told me when he could afford so I thought it would be a good idea to give him that gift,” Huggins said.

Cable & Wireless will facilitate this gesture through its internet phone system.

Huggins said that the concept for the directory cover, which was done by Nadia Huggins, was inspired by World Cup Cricket which was hosted this year in the Caribbean and said that former CEO Darryl Jackson was enthusiastic about the idea when approached.

Addressing the launching, Sports Minister Glen Beache congratulated Cable and Wireless, referring to the company as one of the best cooperate citizens in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

He said that he was in agreement of the honouring of the outstanding cricketers, noting that his Government has been very supportive of the sport of cricket.

Director on the West Indies Cricket Board, local businessman Ken Boyea said that Cable and Wireless should be congratulated for putting emphasis in the right place.

Acting CEO Foster Hannaway said that the directory will be remembered and cherished for a long time.

The players featured on the cover of the directory are Wilfred Slack and Neil Williams, who played international for England, Fast bowlers Winston Davis, Ian Allen, Nixon McLean, Deighton Butler, and Michael Findlay and Alphonso “Alfie” Roberts. A ninth player, former Cable & Wireless employee, Cameron Cuffy declined the opportunity to be featured.
