Groups march for children

“Give generously!” was the call and the public did just that as uniformed groups marched through Kingstown appealing for funds for needy children.

“The fundraiser was very successful,” Janice Fraser of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Children Welfare Committee told SEARCHLIGHT. “People and businesses assisted us a great deal by donating to the Children’s Welfare Committee and this in itself showed an increase from the other years.”{{more}}

The groups, accompanied by the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force Band, included the Girl Guides, Cubs, Brownies, Scouts, Liberty Lodge Boys, Optimist Club and the Intermediate High School.

“The funds will help in paying the cost of running the schools. This includes buying food for the children, buying materials for them to use while they are at school and even paying some of the teachers,” Fraser told SEARCHLIGHT.

The funds will go to the same 13 nursery schools that they are accustomed supporting over the past couple of years.

However although they are distributing these funds to the Day Care Centers, they are also asked to give an overview of how they spend the donations that the committee has provided.

The fundraiser was held in collaboration with Universal Children’s Day with the National Committee on the Rights of the Child and UNICEF.

St Vincent and the Grenadines Children Welfare Committee operates from Government House with the Governor-General as Chairman.
