Newton Spence dies after accident

After surviving a terrible accident Newton Spence has succumbed to his injuries at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital.

Spence died on Sunday July, 17.

Spence had spent seven years on death row at Her Majesty’s Prison but walked away a free man on Monday, November 11, 2002.{{more}}

On two occasions he had faced the hangman’s noose for the murder of John Edwards on January 15, 1995.

His brush with the law stemmed from an incident in which 20-year-old Edwards of Georgetown succumbed to a bullet wound to the throat.

Spence’s second conviction was quashed by the Privy Council on account of a material irregularity at his retrial, he having been tried by 11 instead of 12 jurors, a ground which did not find favour when advanced before the Court of Appeal.

At the time of his freedom the bespectacled, thick set and graying Spence may have grown accustomed to the stark reality of death that often stared him in the eyes, having been in and out of death row.
