Sion Hill teacher did not live to celebrate school’s CPEA accomplishment
When SEARCHLIGHT visited the Sion Hill Government School (SHGS) back in 2023 to interview their top student, Grade Six teacher, Ynolde Hutchinson predicted that the school would continue to improve on its performance in the Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment (CPEA) and could very well cop a spot in the top ten.
Her predictions came to pass in 2025 when 11-year-old Raffique Latchman placed fifth overall in the country and also earned the bragging rights of being the only student of the 1,682 who wrote the exam to score a perfect 100 in Science.
However, Hutchinson would not get the joy of basking in the school’s accomplishment, as she passed away in November, 2024, just a short time before her official retirement from the teaching service.
Hutchinson’s grandson, Rhys Hutchinson, emerged as the top student at the SHGS after his performance in the 2023 CPEA landed him just outside the top ten, at position number 11 for the boys overall. The school also had another student in the top 50 for boys, and two in the top 50 for girls, with seven students in total gaining high percentage passes.
This year the school gained an 81 percent pass rate, a slight decline from their 83 percent in 2023.
