Election petition battle adjourned
ONE OF THE MOST signifi cant cases in this young nation’s history is currently being argued before Justice Gertel Thom in Kingstown. Lawyers for the petitioners Carlos Williams,candidate for the Northern Grenadines and Luke Browne, East Kingstown candidate for the Unity Labour Party argue that the two candidates who contested seats in the Northern Grenadines, Dr. Godwin Friday and in East Kingstown Dwight Fitzgerald Bramble for the New Democratic Party were not eligible to contest elections since both were the holders of Canadian passports and had sworn allegiance to that nation.
Both gentlemen contested the November 27 polls and won overwhelmingly and since then assumed duties as Prime Minister and Foreign Minister respectively.
The challenges to the nominations of Dr. Friday and Bramble were made on November 27, 2025, alleging that both Dr. Friday and Bramble hold Canadian citizenship, which disqualified them under Section 26 of the Constitution from contesting the November 27, general elections which was won by the New Democratic Party by a 14 to 1 margin.
