Barbados take 2024 Regional Under-19 Cricket Title

Barbados won the 2024 West Indies Rising Stars Men’s Under-19 Cricket Championship on Sunday, July 22, 2024 by virtue of winning the first inning in their encounter with Jamaica at the Arnos Vale Cricket Grounds.

Batting first, Barbados declared at 200 for 9, with Raneico Smith scoring an even 50, and soon were celebrating their declaration as the Jamaica inning stuttered to 127 for 8 declared. The Jamaican inning was not allowed any breathing space as fast bowler, Jatario Prescod, with 3/ 51 from 14 overs, and spinner Saurav Worrell with 3/24 from 10 overs led the Barbadian attack.

Any thoughts by Jamaica, who defeated Barbados in last year’s final on the same ground, securing an outright victory was put to bed with second innings half centuries from opener Kyle Jordan, 62, and Joshua Morris who continued his good form with 52, ending the contest; Jamaica finishing in the runners-up spot in the 2-day championship.

Over at the Sion Hill Playing Field, the Windward Islands took the third spot after taking first inning over the Leeward Islands. Batting first, the Windward Islands were bowled out for 96, Devonie Joseph top scoring with 30. Micah Mckenzie took 3/36. In reply the Leeward Islands were 68 for 8 overnight, and were all out on the second morning for 78. Devannand Singh and Tyanick Honore made 16 each, with the inning’s destroyer being Kirt Murray with 5/19.

Batting a second time, the Windward Islands declared at 151 for 6- Lee John scored 28, while the twin brothers Kirt and Kirsten Murray scored 26 each. Nathan Edward with 3/39, and Micah Mckenzie 3/61 were the wicket takers for the Leewards.

Chasing 169 for an outright win, the Leeward Islands reached 99 for 7 at the end of the allotted time. Tyanick Honore led the way with 56. Kirsten Murray with 2/24, and Jelani Joseph 2/6 were the wicket takers for the Windward Islands.

The fifth place payoff match between Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago was drawn, with Guyana taking first innings points. Batting first, Guyana scored 249, and dismissed Trinidad and Tobago for 90. Sent in to bat a second time, Trinidad and Tobago were 71 for 5, still 88 runs shy of making the Guyanese bat a second time.
