Friday mentions Precious Williams as he laments the state of crime in SVG

Months after her body was found stuffed in a plastic bag along Murrays Road, the name Precious Williams is still being mentioned.

The issue of her death was raised by opposition leader, Dr Godwin Friday on Monday, February 6, as he spoke about the crime situation in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG).

Friday aired his views on the New Times programme hosted by his New Democratic Party (NDP) on Nice Radio.

Speaking about the number of unsolved homicides here, the opposition leader asked about the status of the investigation into the death of Precious Williams.

Williams was a 17 year old student at the time of her death. The body of Walvaroo resident was found stuffed in a blue plastic bag in some bushes along Murray’s Road, Kingstown on May 12 last year, but it was not identified until May 16.

A post mortem performed at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital revealed that a cut to the throat contributed to her death. Multiple other wounds on her body also reflected injury by a sharp object.

This case was one of the 42 record number of homicides in 2022, some of which still remain unsolved.

Commenting on the trend of crime in 2023, Friday said “every weekend, it seems to be that there is another homicide in the country”.

So far for 2023, there have been two police involved deaths and five other homicides in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

“That is alarming, the rate at which this is going on.

“This is something that we are being led to believe is the new normal,” the opposition leader lamented.

He called on the authorities to do something about the number of violent crimes in SVG.

“We cannot accept that this is the way life will continue in St Vincent and the Grenadines,” Friday said.

He added that the police have an obligation to keep members of the public informed.

“They need to let people know that something is being done,” he said.

“There is crime everywhere, but not everywhere crime is as bad as it is in St Vincent and the Grenadines”.
