Man who breached no contact order with ex-girlfriend remanded

Man who breached no contact order with ex-girlfriend remanded

A man who is feared to be showing signs of escalating his actions towards his ex-girlfriend is being kept in prison until his trials later this month.

Eron Williams allegedly ventured onto the Redemption Sharpes property of his ex-partner on October 6.

At the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court (KMC) on October 10, Williams pleaded ‘not guilty’ to the offence of trespass with intent to annoy the sister of his former partner (who lives on the same family property as her sister).

Prosecutor, Corporal Corlene Samuel objected to bail, noting that the defendant “just came out of prison on bail as it relates to matters resulting from…this said yard. With the virtual complainant’s sister.”

The prosecution noted that Williams has several matters in the court system related to his former partner, some of which hearing has begun in the court.

“…Prosecution is of the opinion that if granted bail, your honour, the defendant will continue what he’s doing,” Samuel stated, “his action shows the court that he has no intention to stop.”

“I know that it is a mere allegation but your honour from what I’m reading on that night the defendant – he was aggressive. He made certain comments and we are of the view that if given the chance he will…your honour, he will escalate,” she said.

The prosecutor explained that their objection is therefore on the grounds that they believe Williams is not going to stop until something is done “about him”.

She also recalled that a condition of the bail granted to Williams on a previous matter was that he have no contact with the alleged victim.

Senior Magistrate, Rickie Burnett asked that the matter be stood down to check this, “because if he is going to conduct himself like that I’m going to revoke his bail.”

When the matter was recalled the magistrate said that the defendant had been granted bail at the KMC on July 21. Part of the bail condition was that he would have no contact with the alleged victim/ his ex-partner.

“It seems as though you were unable to get a surety(someone to agree to be legally responsible in paying the bail sum if the defendant should not appear for his court dates),” the magistrate noted.

Therefore, the defendant was in a prison cell from July until recently (he says September).

“As soon as you got out you are charged for doing certain things…” Burnett said.

The magistrate asked the prosecution what time of the day the alleged incident occurred, and the prosecution said that it was 10:00 p.m.

Williams asked the court to put him on a curfew (an order to stay at home at nights).

The defendant pleaded that he just came out of jail, and he also seemed to speak about his children.

The sister of his former partner, who was at court, said that the defendant is not giving up and she believes his intention is to kill.

The prosecution also reiterated that there are several other matters. “There is the matter with the burning of the house and all of that your honour, and the thing is he knows that he was not supposed to have contact(with his former partner).”

She noted that with this recent allegation the defendant was apparently forceful and seems to be escalating.

“I have to give respect to the application that is made before me and the information that is available to me. I cannot be reckless in my judicial function,” the magistrate said, “I’m denying bail at this stage, if you so desire you could apply to the judge in chambers for bail.”

The matter was adjourned to October 19, when Williams has other matters in court.

When walking outside the court the defendant completely raised his shirt over his head, shielding his face.
