Marketing in a political climate: Why Christmas can’t wait.

Marketing in a political climate: Why Christmas can’t wait.

When election season ramps up and more so now when we are just over a week away, many businesses/brands pull back on marketing. The noise is loud, the national focus is elsewhere, and it feels risky to advertise when everyone’s attention seems locked on politics. Be that as it may, with the election on November 27th and Christmas around the corner, waiting until it is ‘quiet’ again can be a costly mistake.

Christmas is the single most commercially active period of the year. It doesn’t pause for politics and consumers don’t stop preparing simply because political campaigns are in effect. If anything, the transition from election mode to Christmas mode happens faster than most businesses expect.

The myth of “Let’s wait until election is over”.

Many business owners assume: “No one will pay attention until the election is done.” However, real consumer behaviour doesn’t support that. People may be talking politics, but they are still: making Christmas lists; comparing prices; searching for outfits for their Christmas dinner; booking services; planning events; checking what stores are offering; looking for convenience; preparing their homes and managing year-end priorities. While politics may dominate the national conversation, consumers don’t wait to start preparing for Christmas. By the time the election ends, people shift immediately into Christmas mode. If your marketing only begins after that shift, you’re entering the busiest retail window at the exact moment when attention is most fragmented.

Why showing up now matters

The brands/businesses that win the season are the ones that understand timing. Election noise is constant but that doesn’t stop Christmas behaviour from building underneath. Here’s how to stay visible without getting tangled in the political flow:

1. Stay neutral but present: Your messaging doesn’t need to comment on politics. It just needs to give people something useful to focus on as they prepare for the season.

2. Speak to real Christmas behaviour: People are organizing their homes and shopping, among other things. Align your marketing with those practical needs.

3. Be consistent: With political coverage running non-stop, there is no perfect ‘quiet’ moment. Instead of waiting for silence, maintain steady, intentional visibility so your audience keeps seeing you.

4. Stand out with creative distinction: Attention is fragmented. Use a clear visual identity, storytelling and a campaign concept that immediately draws the eye and feels fresh; something that captures curiosity without competing with political material.

The business concern

I have heard the argument that business activity will depend on who wins the election. It must be noted that Christmas behaviour is driven more by seasonal needs than politics. People continue to shop and make decisions for the season.

Brands that remain steady are better positioned to serve customers regardless of the outcome. Your brand doesn’t need to join the political conversation to stay visible,

it just needs to remind people that there are still moments that matter beyond the election cycle.

Christmas doesn’t wait

For most sectors such as retail, hospitality, food, finance, personal services, home improvement, entertainment, November is when momentum builds. By the time

ballots are counted, consumers are already planning Christmas purchases, home updates and more. If you’re not visible before then, you have missed the window when people are ready to think, plan and act. The strongest brands during an election season don’t compete with the noise. They create a consistent rhythm, one that speaks to everyday priorities, optimism and the life people return to once the debates fade.

The bottom line

Marketing in a political climate requires awareness and confidence, not silence. Start now if you haven’t yet, stay authentic and keep your message focused on what your audience genuinely needs once the campaigning ends. At the end of the day, when the votes are counted and the dust settles, the brands that kept showing up steadily, respectfully and creatively are the ones people will remember.
