Spartans Cricket Club set for revival
Persons who have served the Spartans Cricket Club for many years, have vouched to have the once national cricket champions be an active organisation once again.
That was one of the commitments emerging from a recognition ceremony held at the Stubbs Playing Field on
Sunday, May 31, 2026, to honour the yeoman service given by Lorraine George to the club and community life in Stubbs.
George, the founder of Spartans was placed in the spotlight, as several persons gave tributes, made donations of cash and in kind, as his legacy was orally documented.
However, George’s honour will continue, as plans are afoot to revive the club.
Lawrence Harry, among those touched by George’s leadership and commitment, revealed the plans to SEARCHLIGHT.
“We are going to revive Spartans. We will start with a village competition. Like the past, that competition was where we got the players. We have also planned to host a match featuring Stubbs Masters and the youngsters from the area who are interested in cricket so we can pull them out and rebuild Spartans,” Harry said.
Spartans has been out of the national cricket limelight for several years, following the club’s demotion.
George’s relevance to the sustenance was underscored at the ceremony, by Nixon Mc Lean, who came up through the Spartans ranks, to the ultimate heights of playing Test Cricket for the West Indies.
Speaking at ceremony, Mc Lean boldly stated: “He moved Spartans from just a team to a proper club. He even went and got sponsorship from the News, hence the News Spartans. I am sure that if manage (George) was thirty- five years younger, we would have had a vibrant Spartans team still”.
Many speakers joined in the chorus that through the leadership of George, their personal lives have changed for the better.
Spartans has produced several players who have excelled at age group, senior St Vincent and the Grenadines, Windwards and various other levels, and have represented West Indies outfits.
Most notable among them are Nixon Mc Lean, Joseph Jack, Uzzah Pope, Dawnley Joseph, Kissinger Mc
Lean, Alfred Bynoe, Reynold Mc Lean, Dawnley Grant, Gidron Pope, Reagan Mc Lean, Micheal Neverson, Kody Hone, Teran Simon and Joey Welcome.
The elderly George welcomed the gesture given to him, noting that he was “elated” to have the appreciation done whilst he is still around and has his faculties intact.
George has the distinction of being the only manager of Spartans.
