Bequia Basketball Association answers the call
THE BEQUIA Basketball Association (BBA) has responded to the decline in youth participation in the annual competition on the Grenadines island.
The hosting of a youth basketball clinic on Saturday, April 25 and Sunday, April 26, 2026, at the Clive Tannis Hard Court in Port Elizabeth, Bequia, was the start of correcting that decline.
The first held for many years, saw more than 55 boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 15 participating in the two-day clinic.
The participants were introduced to fundamental basketball skills including dribbling, passing and shooting, as well as fun games and exercises designed to build confidence and teamwork. The clinic was made possible through a full community effort led by coaches Kelan Edwards, Keithroy Lavia, Denroy Hutchins, Sabrina Mitchell, Colson Peters,Wayne Williams, Steveon Taylor, Lennox Ince, Jermaine John and volunteers.
A release from the BBA states that they were inspired to organize the clinic following the 23rd Annual Tournament in August 2025, when only two youth division teams were registered, compared to previous years when there were more than eight teams.
The Association’s goal is to continue these clinics every Sunday from 9:00 a.m to noon, leading up to the 24th annual tournament scheduled for August 2026.
