Barrouallie Secondary does the football double
Minister of Education Curtis King presents the junior division championship trophy to the Central Leeward Secondary School

Barrouallie Secondary does the football double

The Central Leeward Secondary School firmly established their position as the top of secondary schools football in St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), when they won both the junior and senior football titles in the 2024 St. Vincent and the Grenadines Inter-Secondary Schools finals on December 8, 2024.

It was the Central Leeward Secondary Warriors’ fourth consecutive senior title, having extended their unbeaten run to 29 games. In the final against the Petit Bordel Secondary School, the scores were locked at 2-all at the end of regulation and extra time.

Obama Barbour and Jamarie Jack were the goal scorers for the Central Leeward Secondary School, while Javan Cato and Dave Laborde scored for the Petit Bordel Secondary School.

The Petit Bordel Secondary School players appeared to have lost focus during the penalty shoot-out as their strikers failed to strike home, leading to them losing 1- 4 to the Central Leeward Secondary.

Despite the tight battle, senior coach of Central Leeward Secondary, Chester Morgan, said his team was always confident of victory.

“We know most of these guys have won basically everything this year, the community football through penalty shoot-outs, so most of them are actually a good bunch of guys who I have confidence in. With penalty kicks, I always tell my players to choose who they want to kick … I don’t usually choose my five, and those with the most confidence are those that are selected,” Morgan stated.

“… we played ‘Peto’ (Petit Bordel Secondary School) in the zone, and we realised that they are actually one of the better teams and they can actually play football. We must give kudos to their coaches. It’s one of the best organised teams I have played for the last past four years. They are properly structured so therefore they can be one of the best teams going forward in the future,” Morgan added.

Coach of the winning junior team, Kenson Wilson, expressed pride with his charges telling SEARCHLIGHT that following the team’s second goal he was assured of victory.

The junior team of the Central Leeward Secondary School defeated the Georgetown Secondary School 2-nil in the final, also on December 8, 2024, with both goals coming from the boots of J-Shan Samuel.

“We had our hardest game in the semi-final which was St. Martin’s. We knew together collectively, as long as we get past St. Martin’s, it would be difficult to not get a cup this year,” Wilson said.

In the final, the Central Leeward Secondary School’s player who created the two chances for goal, came off the bench, and Wilson explained the reason why.

“We saved him for the second half. Going into the game we knew how instrumental he would be. We saved him, brought him on and all the instructions were to pull them wide, bring the ball to the striker. Just a good finish.”
