Windward Islands Schools Games 2024 cancelled

THE CABINET of St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), has taken the decision to cancel the 2024 edition of the Canadian Bank Note/ Winlott Inc. Windward Islands Schools Games.

The Games were scheduled to take place here in St Vincent and the Grenadines, from July 27 to August 3.

A release from the Department of Sports last Monday July 15, 2024, read in part: “Due to the current conditions and resources being used in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, Cabinet has taken the decision to cancel the hosting of the 2024 CBN/WINLOTT Windward Island School Games”.

The multi- sports Games, features competitions in Football, Netball, Track and Field, Male and Female Volleyball, as well as Male and Female Basketball, among the four Windward Islands- Dominica, Saint Lucia, Grenada and St Vincent and the Grenadines.

The Games returned to the annual calendar last year in Grenada, following cancellations in 2020, 2021 and 2022, because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Windward Islands Schools Games are said to date back to the 1920s.

Over the years the event has experienced stops, restarts, revisions and revamped formats.
