Greiggs retains title in Marriaqua Primary Schools’ Football Tournament

The second edition of the Memorial Funeral Home Marriaqua Football Association (MFA) Primary Schools’ Cup ended last Friday, April 14 at the Cane End Playing Field.

When the dust had settled in the final game of the competition, Greiggs Primary, the inaugural champions, remained at the top.

A 4-3 outcome from sudden death penalty kicks over home team- Cane End Government, gave Greiggs the title.

Both teams had played to a 2-2 draw in regulation time. An own goal inadvertently turned into his team’s net by Ronny Joseph gave Greiggs the lead.

Joseph though compensated with two strikes of his own, as Cane End took the lead.

However, a late strike from Kesson Durrant sent the match into penalties.

Greiggs who played unbeaten last year, were not as dominating this time around; they were defeated by Cane End 2-1 in the preliminaries, while Cane End’s only loss was in the final.

Leading up to the final, Greiggs registered a 5-0 win over Lowmans Leeward Anglican, while Cane End edged out Belmont Government in two contrasting semi-finals.

Preceding the final, Lowmans had a 4-0 triumph over Belmont to cop the third place.

Greiggs Primary’s Kesson Durrant, with eight goals was the competition’s top goal scorer, and Kimon Pope, also of Greiggs, was adjudged the Best Goal Keeper on show.

Belmont Government’s Sheronique Scott, had the distinction of being the lone female goal keeper in the competition.

Twelve primary schools participated in the competition, which also had partnership from the St Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation and Extreme FM.
