SVG pouches three bronze medals at 2019 Junior Carifta Games

The St Vincent and the Grenadines team to the 48th Junior Carifta Games, returned home Tuesday evening, after claiming three bronze medals at the regional showpiece, staged at the Truman Bodden Stadium in Grand Cayman last weekend.

Ulanda Lewis, who reached the Under-17 girls’ finals in the 100m and 200m at her debut outing in the Bahamas last year, finished third in both events this time around.

After timing 11. 96 seconds in her heat, Lewis clocked 11.91 seconds, to beat Bahamas’ Anthaya Charlton and Trinidad and Tobago’s Shaniqua Bascombe to the finish line.

Lewis, in the 200m heats, stopped the clocked at 24.19 seconds and lowered her time in the final, by running 24.09 seconds. She was beaten by Bascombe and Brianna Lyston of Trinidad and Tobago, in that order.

St Vincent and the Grenadines’ other medallist was Handal Roban, who copped third in the Boys’ Under-20 – 800m, behind the Jamaican duo of Kimar Farquharson and Tyrice Taylor.

Roban’s time in the final was 1 minute 55.22 seconds, as he bettered the 1 minute 55.25 seconds, done in the qualifying round.

Meanwhile, St Vincent and the Grenadines was nipped to another podium finish, as debutant Nellie Ambriton placed fourth in the boys’ Under-17 800m. Ambriton clocked 1 minute 59.98 seconds.

Also placing fourth was Tamara Woodley in the girls’ Under-20 400m hurdles, with another Vincentian, Odeshia Nanton coming in seventh.

It was Nanton’s first year at the games.

Another debutant, Ashanti Richards, came in fifth in the girls’ Under-17 1500m, while Uroy Ryan, who tasted the games in 2018, ended fifth in the boys’ Under-17 long jump and sixth in the high jump.

Likewise, new comer Jacque Edwards, who contested the open boys’ Octathlon, placed eighth, whilst the experienced Zita Vincent ended a disappointing ninth in the girls’ Under-20 – 1500m and was tenth in the 800m.

And, St Vincent and the Grenadines was unable to medal in the girls’ Under-20 4 x 400m, as they did in 2018, when after placing third, was upgraded to first, following the disqualification of the first and second places.

Woodley, Annecia Richards and Vincent were still in the line-up, with Nanton the other athlete, the Vincentians had to settle for the fourth spot.

The team though was without Zamesha Myle, who suffered an injury in her 400m heat.
