New Greiggs softball cricket champs await crowning

A new champion of the Hairoun / FLOW / Sea Operations Nar Fren Dem Greiggs men’s 20/20 softball cricket competition, will be crowned this Sunday at the Greiggs Central Playing Field.

This, after last year’s winners Sion Hill Tallawahs were booted by Israel Bruce Smashers Inc. in their quarter-final showdown, last Saturday.

Reduced to 15 overs because of a late start, Smashers Inc. batted first and made 140 for 7 from their 15 overs.

Glendon James’ 54 and Glenford Woodley’s 38 not out, were Smashers Inc.’s leading batsmen.

Bowling for Sion Hill Tallawahs, Shanley Lavia and Shawn Williams, both snared 2 for 24.

Sion Hill Tallawahs’ reply was halted by bad light at 122 for 7 from 13.5 overs. Erwin Williams topscored with 44.

Anthony John took 3 for 13 and Keno Matthews, 3 for 29, to be Smashers Inc’s most successful bowlers.

At the stage of calling off the match, Sion Hill Tallwahs were scoring at a rate of 9.03 runs per over, as opposed to Smashers Inc’s rate of 9.3.

Smashers thus advanced to the final, on the basis of a faster scoring rate.

On Sunday, Smashers then marched into the final, with an eight-wicket win over another former winner, Owia Young Strikers.

Batting first, Owia Young Strikers reached 98 for 5 from their 17 overs, as the match was altered because of a late start.

Salvan Browne topscored with 35 not out, while St. Clair Dickson took 2 for 5 and Keno Matthews, 2 for 26.

In response, Smashers reached 102 for 2 from 12.3 overs. Delano Woodley struck 50 not out.

Smashers’ opponents in the final would be either Bank of SVG All Stars or Country Meet Town Outa Trouble, who will slug it out on Saturday from 2 30 p.m.

Outa Trouble booked their semi-final place by dumping Street Fighters by 73 runs on Sunday.

Mickel Mapp struck 66, as Outa Trouble posted 156 for 5 from their 20 overs.

Street Fighters were dismissed for 83 in 17 overs. Ozni Billingy scored 29.

Richie Richards took 3 for 13 and Asif Hooper, 3 for 19. They were Outa Trouble’s main wicket-takers.

Sunday’s men’s final, set to bowl off at 2 p.m., would be preceded by the women’s 10/10 final, which features United Survivors and Ball Burners from 1230pm.

The women’s 10/10 third place takes place on Saturday at 12 30 p.m., and features Sea Operations Nar Fren Dem and North Leeward, with the men’s third place showdown scheduled to bowl off from 10 a.m. on Sunday.

The closing and presentation ceremony takes place immediately following Sunday’s men’s final.
